Is There A Way To Keep My Cat From Using His Litter Box Like A Sand Box?
everytime i change his litter, he digs as though he’s excavating some rare lost treasure, litter going everywhere. when he poops, he throws out half the litter covering it up. what’s going on,and what can i do?

This is his instinct kicking in. There is not a whole lot that you can do. Your best bet is to get a covered box and one with a tracking pad at the front so your room doesn’t look like a beach. Getting a slightly bigger and deeper box can help a bit too.
Wish there was a perfect answer for you.

It has something to do with smell and instinct. They bury their poos so that the scent sticks and animals know that that area is taken. put newspaper under the litterbox so that it doesn’t get on the rug or floor.

I do that too. It’s just a cat thing, no biggy, just annoying for you is all.

My cats do this too. I can’t discourage it, cause then they won’t want to use it for it’s intended use. I just keep those rubber shoe mats around the box, so it is easier to clean up when they throw it around.

Well, you could maybe try to train him to not do that, but i think that would probably be pretty hard, im sorry, but im not really sure!
Good Luck Though!!!!

I find that the conventional litter trays just are not deep enough.
I use a large plastic storage box.
But because it is high sided, you will need to weigh it down with some stones or bricks in the bottom, then cover that with litter, otherwise your cat will tip it up when getting out.
